Mini guide to Verdun
Verdun
Verdun is located in France’s Lorraine région, in the northeast of the country. With a population of approximately 25,000, it is the most populous of the communities in the Meuse.
Nearby, to the east of Verdun, is the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial to the 14,246 American soldiers who died in battle here during WWI. There’s a memorial in the chapel to 954 missing Americans whose remains were never found. A number of French and German cemeteries dot the battlefield as well, with the largest being the French National Cemetery near Fort Douaumont.
The ‘Bayonet Trench’ is one of the most well-known battlefield memorials, and marks the location of the spot where a row of bayonets, still fixed to rifles, was discovered after the war. Beneath each of the dozen bayonets the body of a French soldier was found. The men were given a proper burial at this spot, and the rifles with their bayonets were left in place, as a poignant memorial.
Getting around Verdun is straightforward as it is relatively small in size. Visiting the battlefields and cemeteries is possible by tour bus and local buses, however it is much more convenient with a hire car. Arranging for a rental car online is a good way to ensure that you secure the best deal, and also to be sure that you have your vehicle of choice waiting for you when you arrive.
