Mini guide to Vasteras
A hundred kilometres west of Stockholm is the old city of Västerås, the capital of the province of Västmanlands. The city is a thriving industrial metropolis, with plenty of other attractions and sights. Many tourists arrive in Vasteras to see the splendid Lake Mälaren. Encompassed by lush scenery, it offers boat rides in all directions.
A must see in Vasteras is Domkyrkoplatsen, the cathedral square, home to the town's 13th-century cathedral, undoubtedly one of the greatest in Sweden. Alternatively, you can head to the Konstmuseum (Arts Museum), where you’ll find exhibitions by some of Scandinavia’s most beloved modernist painters.
If you feel like trekking around Vasteras, the Gamla Stan or old town, is the most popular area for sightseeing. A string of interesting buildings dating back from the 18th century, and attractive cobblestone lanes, make it a worthwhile hike.
Towering over Vasteras is the 25-floor skyscraper, Skrapan. This glass facade, housing shops, offices, and a hotel, is adjacent to the Gallerian, the major shopping mall of the city. Here, you’ll find stores and restaurants for all tastes and budgets.
You’ll need at least a day to explore Lake Mälaren, with ancient its villages and castles, including Uppsala and Gripsholm, Sigtuna, Skokloster Castle, and Gamla Uppsala. You can arrange guided boat trips in the town.
Vasteras Airport is five miles from the city and buses or taxis are available from the airport. Frequent trains run between Stockholm and Västerås during the day, the trip taking about an hour. By bus, you can take no. 846, run by Swebuf, which has connections running throughout the day. From Stockholm, drivers can take the E18 going immediately west via Enköping into Västerås.
