Vannes
Vannes is one of the major tourist centres of southern Brittany. Located on the Golfe du Morbihan, it is an appealing destination having a compact medieval centre. A large number of tourists, added to the student population at the Université de Rennes, make for a vibrant and often festive atmosphere.
The port is located at the southern end of Vannes and is bursting with yachts. Just to the north is the busy Place Gambetta, which is the main point of entry into the old town. You’ll find the tourist office here, housed in a 17th century, half-timbered building.
Place Henri-IV is a favourite spot from which visitors are afforded picturesque view of houses overhanging a maze of narrow streets. The town’s official centre is Place de la République, where you’ll find the attractive Hotel de Ville.
Old town Vannes offers the visitor a good selection of hotels, ranging from smaller guest houses and family-style hotels, to the more upscale boutique properties. The prices are rather high inside the city walls and tend to decrease as you move farther away from the centre. The same is true for restaurants. In both cases, the quality and selection are often better away from the tourist centre.
Although the old town is compact, the larger city is not, and getting to some of the attractions at the edge of the city requires the use of public transportation in the form of buses. Hiring a car can be a good alternative, as it offers more freedom to take in a number of the area’s highlights.
