Car Hire Valentigney
Mini guide to Valentigney
Valentigny
Valentigny is often used as a base for visitors interested in exploring destinations in nearby Doubs. Doubs was named after the Doubs River and is part of Franche-Comté. Victor Hugo was born in Doubs; and among the famous names at one time imprisoned at the Château de Joux were Heinrich von Kleist, Mirabeau and Toussaint Louverture. The closest main town to Valentigny is Belfort.
Belfort is located at the eastern edge of Franche-Comté, bordering the Alsace. The citadel, in particular, is well worth visiting at least to see the lion statue sculpted by Auguste Bartholdi. It was Bartholdi who created the Statue of Liberty that France was to present as a gift to the US.
The Jura Mountains rise to the east of Besançon and dominate the Doubs landscape. There are castles at both Besançon and Joux that are favourites of visitors. The fortress at Joux houses a museum displaying a collection of 600 rare weapons dating from the 18th-20th centuries. There is also a well at the castle which is 120 metres deep, a record for Europe.
Hiring a car is the best way to see what this region has to offer. There is public bus service on offer, as well as regional train service, but it’s likely that the points of greatest interest to you will be most easily reached by car. Booking a car online before your visit to the area is the simplest way to ensure that you receive the best possible deal.
