Hiring a car is perhaps the best way to explore America. It’s a country geared up for the automobile, with a vast network of highways, turnpikes that spirit you across whole state, and plenty to see outside of the main metropolis areas. However, you’ll certainly need several trips to see it all, it might even take you a week to drive from coast to coast.
New England, in the northeast is reminiscent of Europe with historic towns, great ski resorts, lovely countryside, pretty coastline and refined culture. Martha’s Vineyard, Rhode Island, Boston and Long Island are draw cards in this area.
All along the Atlantic seaboard are major cities, each important and unique in their own right. Chesapeake bay is lovely and there are some popular beach resorts further south in the Carolinas.
Florida is one of America’s most popular destinations, thanks to plentiful sun, endless beaches, enormous amusement parks, the vast and serene Everglades wetland area, lazy resorts and fantastic diving on the Keys - most notably the curious little town of Key West. Orlando is the busiest town; hosting Disneyworld, Seaworld and the EPCOT centre, Fort Lauderdale is full of expensive yachts and Miami is exciting.
New Orleans is the home jazz and zydeco music, southern comfort, bayou (and the Mississippi delta), voodoo and fun-filled nights in its French Quarter. African-American culture is well established here, and anything goes during the annual Mardi Gras.
The Great Lakes area is the heartland of America, both rural and industrialized, with busy cities like Chicago, Detroit and Cleveland all providing plenty for visitors. Curious Amish communities are found nearby.
If you’re in the area then its worth traveling a day west of Chicago to the Black Hills in the Dakotas, a wilderness area famous for the massive ex-presidents busts carved into Mount Rushmore. Further West is Salt Lake city, with its unusable Mormon history. Much of this area is desert but Nevada draws the crowds to its gambling and entertainment centres at Reno and Las Vegas.
California is a country in itself with a fantastic coastline best seen from Highway 1 (route 66), which winds its way through pretty Big Sur, en-route from San Francisco to LA, encountering plenty of great seaside towns and beaches along the way. Yosemite Park in the State’s north east is a spectacular valley guarded by towering rock faces, sharp peaks and tall waterfalls.
Inland from Southern California is the enormous Grand Canyon – the world’s biggest depression. The vistas are incredible, and the walk to the bottom, quite literally breathtaking! The stark landscape ,dotted with mesas and butts, in Arizona are also unusual.
If you make it to the northwest, Yellowstone park, with its clockwork `old faithful` geyser, is lovely, as are the giant redwoods found in North California.
