Car Rental Toulon - Exploring Toulon
After a visit to the hilly inland areas of Toulon, head for some sunny days at the seaside. Thriving cities such as Nice, with its abundance of museums, and fashionable Marseille face the Mediterranean Sea.
To the west and along the coast, youll find Marseille, the second-largest city in France. It was founded by the Greeks some 2,500 years ago and nowadays is a lively and picturesque industrial port city. Memorable sights here include: Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde; the Cathedral Museum of the Roman Docks; and the Puget sculptures at the town hall.
To the east of Toulon, Nice lies on the French Riviera and has one of the most beautiful coastlines in Europe. There's a higher density of museums in Nice than in many French cities of comparable size. The vibrant old town, a warren of narrow streets in warm Italianate ochre and pastel colours, is busy with cafés and restaurants. The glorious morning flower market should not be missed.
On the hills above Nice is Cimiez, which boasts an exotic Russian cathedral as well as its Roman remains, including baths and an amphitheatre. Additionally, the Musée Matisse features a superb collection of drawings, paintings and bronzes celebrating the artist Marc Chagalls long sojourn in Nice.
The Principality of Monaco, the worlds oldest dynasty, is roughly divided into two areas: the old walled town of Monaco-Ville surrounding the fortress-palace on the cliff tops, and the newer commercial district of Monte Carlo (named after Prince Charles III), consisting of the harbour and casino. Monte Carlo is a tax-haven for the rich and famous, and contains palatial villas and hotels, yacht-filled harbours and expensive boutiques.
