Car Hire Thassos - Mini guide to Thassos

At the heart of the Aegean Sea, Thassos is renowned for its clean beaches, friendly hospitality and lush scenery. The northern harbour town of Thassos is a bustling modern city and the island’s tourism centre.

Famed for its marble mining, the old town is surrounded by a stunning four- kilometre chalk white marble wall. The giant working marble factories of Thassos are a prime attraction. Thassos also attracts discerning sun seekers to its fine sand beaches and crystal clear waters. The neighbouring shallow bay of Makryammos is particularly idyllic and perfect for relaxing.

Thassos town is easily negotiable on foot, and there are many beautiful marble buildings, altars and statues to admire. Agora, the town’s main market, is definitely worth a visit and located at the market’s side entrance is the interesting archeology museum. The big museum garden displays statues of eagles, lions and more.

Thassos is host to a wide variety of shopping, and its many traditional stores are famous for locally made honey and olive oils. Thassos’ modern centre is also home to a wide range of restaurants, cafes and entertainment including many Internet and play station shops. The town is scattered with specialty bakeries selling Thassos’ puff bread, filled with spinach and sheep’s milk cheese.

Taking a break from the beaches and exploring inland is particularly rewarding. To the east is the 300-year-old mountain village of Panagia. The quaint narrow streets and small white houses with slate roofs are typical of this village. The ancient village of Kastro, now deserted, is located high in the Ipsarion hills. The village was used to protect island inhabitants from pirates in the 14th century and is home to many ancient ruins.

The nearest airport is Kavalla’s Megas Alexandros Airport, located 30 minutes from the town’s main harbour. Alternatively, the visitor can arrive at Thessalonica International Airport and continue by bus or taxi (140 miles). From the harbour, regular ships (80 minutes) and fast ferries (45 minutes) ply the route to Thassos.
