Car Hire Telluride - Mini guide to Telluride
Few towns enjoy a better geographic position than Telluride, which is located at the base of the Telluride Ski Mountain, divided by the attractive San Miguel River, and surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Rockies.
This small town is centred amid some of Americas finest scenery and offers all the outdoor pursuits youd expect from a mountain resort, with no shortage of skiing, hiking, biking, fishing and horseback riding. Additionally, Telluride is a notable historical location, boasting some fabulous old buildings. Due to its important contributions to early mining, Telluride has been set aside as a National Historic Landmark District since 1964.
Telluride Ski Resort, just above the town, offers a combination of gentle slopes for beginners and more challenging runs for experienced skiers and snowboarders. Cross-country skiing is also popular in and around Telluride, with Town Park being a particularly popular area. Town Park also features an ice-skating rink and a sledding hill.
In summer, skiing is replaced by hiking and horseback riding. The Bear Creek Canyon Trail is a six-kilometre roundtrip hike leading through some exquisite scenery and up to a charming waterfall.
The Jud Wiebe Trail is another popular walk that loops above and around the town for just over four kilometres, and offers views the town, the ski area, and Bridal Veil Falls - Colorados tallest free-falling waterfall. There is also a three-kilometre trail that leads directly up to Bridal Veil Falls, starting from the east end of Telluride Canyon.
The Telluride Historical Museum traces the history of the town and area, including the history of the local Native American Indians, the history of gold mining, and the story of Butch Cassidys first bank robbery, which took place at the San Miguel Valley Bank in 1889.
There are several notable old buildings in Telluride, including: the San Miguel County Courthouse, the functioning New Sheridan Hotel and Opera House, the Roma Bar, St Patricks Catholic Church, and more. All these buildings date back to the late 1800s. The Rio Grande Southern Railway Depot, dating from 1891, was renovated and converted into a restaurant.
