Tarouca is a small village about 10 kilometres to the north of Lamego. It is situated in a beautiful valley and surrounded by rugged rock walls. For the more adventurous, the river becomes a play park and on most weekends water sport, like swimming, hydrospeed and canoeing is practised here. The hillock where the castle once stood, offers wonderful views of the surrounding landscape. A mini zoo, with several bird species is another attraction to the area and is greatly appreciated by the professional birdwatcher.

A great majority of the local population are self employed and wonderful craftsmanship can be found at many roadside craft markets. Handiwork like wicker baskets, clogs made locally, hoods and woollen capes are specialities. The city of Tarouca is well known for its festivals. One of the more interesting is the festival of The Lord of Miracles, where life size imitations of Jesus are carried through the streets of Tarouca. Other places of interest are the many, very famous local restaurants and for those interested in the history of the city, there are numerous historical sites and wonderful entertainment establishments.
