Car Rental Switzerland - Exploring Switzerland
Switzerland is truly a rewarding country to explore by car, incredibly beautiful, clean and environmentally well-preserved. Outside of the modest cities is a whole country of green meadows, lovely lakes and towering mountains, with endless hiking trails and nature reserves open to the public.
The Alps is the chief attraction in this landlocked country, and the real jaw-dropping scenery is found in the Jungfrau region south of Interlaken. The towering 4000m triplets - the Jungfrau, Mönch and Eiger - dominate the area, and there are plenty of cable cars, funiculars, cog-wheel railways and hiking trails offering panoramic vantage points for those not suffering landscape vertigo. The popular skiing resort of Zermatt is shadowed by one of the most famous peaks in the Alps, the 4478m Matterhorn.
Schloss Thun, just south of Bern, is a 12th-century village built on a defensively hill, Schloss Oberhofen, nearby, is a lovely, well preserved, castle.
Reuss is a picturesque Middle Ages town near Lucerne, retaining its ancient charm with 15th-century buildings, painted facades, towers, and postcard-perfect covered bridges.
Overlooked by most visitors, the pretty area of pastures and woodlands in the Jura mountain chain, known as Franches Montagnes, has 1500kms of hiking trails and some 200kms of cross-country ski trails.
Lake Geneva (Lac Leman) is pretty (even by Swiss standards), and at its eastern end is the popular Chillon Castle with its fantastic location. The castle is located within walking distance of Montreux, the centrepiece of the Swiss Riviera and famous for its annual jazz festival.
Ascona is tucked away beyond the Alps on the shores of Lake Maggiore, enjoying a Mediterranean climate and distinctive Italian character, making it a popular hideaway with artists.
