Rent a Car Sweden - Geography Sweden
Sweden is a large, geographically varied country with its sense of space being one of its best features. Norway provides a natural frontier to the west on the other side of Skanderna, Sweden's modest mountain range. Glacial activity has forged the landscape of Sweden with its 7000 km-long coastline cut by fjords long, narrow sea inlets. Sweden's highest peak is the glacier-capped northern peak of Mt Kebnekaise at 2111 m. With huge forested areas and so many lakes lakes (100,000) Sweden provides some of the best wilderness hiking in Europe.
The south is the most densely populated, particularly in the west with gently undulating, picturesque holiday lands and stunning beaches. The west has many historical ports, such as Gothenburg, Helsingborg and Malmö, while off the southeast coast, the Baltic islands of Öland and Gotland are the country's most popular resorts. The north is sparsely populated with huge expanses of forest and rivers. Here you can travel for miles without seeing a soul.
Animals abound in the wilderness of Sweden; however the lynx and brown bear populations have suffered at the hands of encroaching agriculture and hunters. There is a constant battle between wolves and farmers as these wild animals prey on livestock to survive. The country also has abundant birdlife, with the northern lakes being a popular place to spot Swedens kingfishers.
