Car Hire Sunderland - Mini guide to Sunderland
Situated on the north east coast of England, the vibrant city of Sunderland has undergone a transformation in recent years to become a leading tourist destination. Once known for its industry and port, now Sunderland offers a host of renowned attractions, as well as great shopping, entertainment options and nightlife.
One of the most fascinating attractions is the National Glass Centre where you can learn about the history of one of mans oldest materials, view stunning collections of glassware and watch artists and designers at work. Another key attraction is the Sunderland Museum and Winter Garden. This fabulous glass and steel structure not only houses numerous hands-on and interactive exhibits, but also a glorious tropical garden complete with a stunning tree-top walkway through the lush canopy.
The city centre is built on the southern banks of the River Wear and is small enough to walk around. The Edwardian architecture of The Empire Theatre dominates the High Street. Walking east takes you through the vast Bridges Shopping Complex, where youll find the best of the UKs retail outlets, and on to the Museum and Winter Gardens on the edge of the tranquil Mowbray Park.
For shopping, as well as the Bridges Complex, just a short way out of town is the Metro Centre, one of the largest indoor shopping centres in Europe, and also home to cinemas, a funfair and many restaurants. The Empire Theatre is probably the best venue for evening entertainment, offering drama, opera, comedy, ballet and much more. In addition, the city centre has a range of fine dining options, numerous bars and pubs and a lively clubbing scene.
Sunderland is also an ideal base for discovering the treasures of the north east. The ancient city of Durham, with its fair-tale castle, cobbled streets and stunning Norman cathedral is just a short drive away. Alternatively, for coastal walks, picnics or a day on the beach, head to South Shields, only half an hour away.
