Mini guide to Stuttgart
Stuttgart is a beautiful city, lying in a luscious valley west of the Neckar river. The picturesque Kriegsberg vineyards stand on the northeast banks of the river, and the town itself is a harmonious blend of old palaces, parks, and charasmatic cafes.
The delightful city centre is pedestrian-friendly, with most attractions within walking distance of each other, and the main shopping area closed to traffic. Schlossplatz (main square) will entice you with it's culture, architecture and stylish entertainment. The exquisite Schlossgarten (palace garden) stretches 4km southwest from the Neckar River to the town centre. Inside the park is the fascinating Schloss Rosenstein, the city's Natural History Museum. Enjoy a cold drink at the beer garden in the Lower Garden, a seven-minute walk northeast of the Hauptbahnhof.
Another favourite with tourists is the Wilhelma botanical gardens and zoo, on the northern side of Rosensteinpark, home to rare species like snow leopards and the virtually extinct mountain tapir.
For rest and relaxation theres the Bad Cannstatt mineral baths, a steamy haven of hot and cold mineral baths, saunas and swimming pools.
The impressive Mercedes Benz Museum exhibits the first car ever built, among hundreds of other automobiles on display. The Porsche Museum also shows off a selection of slick, classic and racing models.
A drive around town will take you to Staatsgalerie, Instrumentum Museum, Stiftskirche, Altes Schloss (old palace), Neues Schloss (new palace), Kunstverein (art gallery) and Bohnenviertel.
