Leonberg, a 15kms drive from Stuttgart, is a charming town that dates back to the Middle Ages. The main attraction is Steinhaus (1350), the oldest building in Leonberg, as well as a 16th century castle and a stunning 13th century Lutheran church The entrance to the Black Forest is on the route between Stuttgart and Leonberg.
Stuttgart's famous wines can be enjoyed at Weinbaumuseum Uhlbach, with excellent tasting and exhibits on the history of winemaking.
Another interesting town outside of Stuttgart is Ludwigsburg, with its landmark Residenzschloss, a massive Baroque castle from the 1700's. Other palaces in the area include the Jagdschloss Favorit and the lakeside Seeschloss Monrepos.

To end your day on a high note, Schillerplatz is a must for open-air operas and concerts in the summertime.
Its also worth driving a few hours southeast to Munich situated among the hills of Bavaria. Its Marienplatz is full of pavement cafes, while the spikes and turrets of the 19th-century neo-Gothic Neues Rathaus, and the Altes Rathaus (c1474), face the square. The palatial Residenz looms over the northern aspect of Max-Joseph-Platz. The Deutsches Museum is cutting edge in some sections, alternatively the English garden is famous for its public nude sunbathing.
