Car Rental Strasbourg - Exploring Strasbourg
Exploring the region around Strasbourg is essential for any tourist who enjoys quality sightseeing and beautiful landscapes. If you are fortunate enough to have your own transport, take a trip to the nearby Black Forest, over the border in Germany. The quaint towns and villages within this expanse of woodland will charm you.
Head south to the picturesque town of Colmar, famed for its Gothic architecture and museums. The best way to see the town is to wander through its twisting lanes and street markets. The Musée d'Unterlinden, housed in a former Dominican convent, is one of the most-visited museums in France because it holds the Isenheim Altarpiece, the masterpiece of Matthias Grünewald (14701528).
Located to the south of Colmar is the intriguing, modern city of Mulhouse. Much of the city was destroyed during WWII, but there are still some remains of its ancient past. The Renaissance-style town hall, for instance, is a striking building ornately painted with allegorical scenes.
Nearby, the Musée des Beaux-Arts contains a collection of paintings by Jacques Hener, Alsace's best known 19th century artist; while the National Automobile Museum has two of the handful of Bugatti Royale cars in existence.
The village of Souffleheim to the north of Strasbourg is famous for ceramics and pottery. The town features many shops selling cake moulds, tureens, saucers and cups, as well as dinnerware, usually in rustic patterns. Other villages of note scattered around the area include Obernai, Illhauesern and Ribeauvillé, with their cobbled, winding streets and traditional atmospheres.
