Car Hire Stornoway Airport - Mini guide to Stornoway Airport
Stornoway Airport provides a gateway to the Western Isles through both Inverness and Glasgow, and inter-island services to Benbecula and Barra. Located on the east coast of Lewis, a few miles from Stornoway, the airport also provides a base for the search and rescue helicopter operated by HM Coastguard.
The single terminal handles direct flights to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness and Benbecula, while the air traffic control at Stornoway supports aircraft flying to and from North America over Iceland. The terminal is becoming increasingly busy due to oil exploration aircraft traffic, and increased development in the North Atlantic. Onward air links to London and a variety of European and trans-Atlantic destinations are available through the three mainland airports, so swift transit to London and other European centres is facilitated.
Stornoway is a relatively small regional facility, with an annual turnover of 100,000 passengers. Hence the facilities at the airport are limited. Small airports are essential to serving local needs, for journeys to hospital and to carry post and other essential goods, especially in remote regions, as well as recreational and leisure flying.
As the airport itself doesn't afford any financial services, passengers are advised to refer to banks in the village, before arriving at the airport.
The recently redeveloped terminal provides a shop offering basic newsagent supplies and snacks. While further refreshment is offered by a small cafe located in the terminal.
There are no business facilities at the airport, as it is still a small and limited facility. However, it complies with international standards, regarding the provision of disability access. Ramps, wide doorways and disabled toilet facilities are all available at the airport.
For further information, refer to the information and orientation desk located in the terminal.
