Stockport lies between the cosmopolitan City of Manchester and the beautiful countryside of the Derbyshire Peaks and the Cheshire Plains. Its a modern city with excellent shopping facilities but just a short ride away from many good attractions.
Bramall Hall, a manor house built in the traditional local style, is one of Cheshire's grandest black and white timber-framed buildings and just a short ride from the city centre. The estate dates back over one thousand years to the time of William the Conqueror. For those who like strolling, there are also beautiful landscaped grounds and woodland trails.
Stockport Air raid shelters, a labyrinth of tunnels under part of the town centre gives an idea of life in 1940s war-torn Britain. On Wellington Road South you can visit Stockport's Hat Works Museum, the only museum in the country dedicated to hats and the hatting industry. For those with a taste for beer, the family owned Robinson's Brewery, located in the city centre, also offers regular brewery tours.
The pedestrianised Mersey way shopping centre has an excellent range of shops and department stores. If shopping makes you hungry, there are many restaurants, cafes and bars to be found in the historic Market Place and Underbanks areas. The Queen's Head, on Little Underbank is a pub of tremendous character and worth a visit even if you dont like beer.
Stockport is well located for trips into the surrounding countryside. A short drive away is Lime Park, an eighteenth century house set in a 4000 acre deer park. You can also visit Quarry bank Mill, a restored Georgian cotton mill in a beautiful woodland setting. There are many other halls, gardens and picturesque villages within easy reach of the town.
Stockport has regular train services to London Euston, while Manchester International Airport is just a short drive from the town centre. If you are arriving by road leave the M60 at junction 1.
