Car Rental Stockholm - Exploring Stockholm
Getting around by car in Stockholm is a little tricky, theres plenty of water in the way, and its often more practical to travel on foot or by tram. Yet beyond the archipelago of islands are some interesting attractions which are worth driving to see.
The greater Stockholm area comprises of more than 10,000 islands, which add to the appeal of this unique city. Most of them are tiny yet there are some lovely places to visit by ferry and in summer the locals love to decamp to their weekend cottages dotted among the many inlets and bays. Several ferry companies run fixed-route or tour rides to various public points. Sandhamn (Sandön) is popular among wealthy sailors and is best on a day trip (90 minutes from Vaxholm). Finnhamn is quieter.
Vaxholm is the chief gateway to the archipelago and is popular with tourists. With many ancient buildings, clusters of summerhouses, plenty of water and the well-placed Vaxholm castle, the town is a delightful visit.
Sigtuna is arguably Swedens oldest surviving town and it includes ruins that date back to its founding as a minting town a thousand years ago. Its a pleasant day trip from Stockholm and has several well-preserved ruinic inscriptions, as well as some notable museums.
Nynäshamn is a busy spa town that has origins as a humble fishing village. The Nynäshamn Folklore Museum gives a good insight into Swedish folklore and the ferry for Gotland leaves from this area.
