All that marks it today is a fenced-off platform. The site of the cathedral was later used to build the church, Notre Dame des Champs, with the intention of reviving religious spirit within the city. The town also boasts botanical gardens that were originally created in the 18th century, with new and exotic species of plants being introduced in the 19th century. The Chateau de Brion is a famous priory in the region where many famous and royal people stayed while on pilgrimage to Mont Saint-Michel. The house is still inhabited today, currently by an English writer and his wife. History continues to flourish in Avranches and its medieval roots are a big attraction for tourists.
