Car Hire St Lo - Mini guide to St Lo
St Lo
Located in the French Normandy region, St Lo suffered badly during the fierce WWII Battle of Normandy. Due to heavy bombing, almost the entire city was destroyed and St Lo earned the tragic nickname ‘Capital of Ruins’.
Fortunately, St Lo was rebuilt and today enjoys the reputation being one of France’s culinary centres and the capital of the Manche department. Best known among gourmands for its outstanding chopped liver, an award-winning product, visitors shouldn’t pass up a chance to sample this local delicacy.
The Gothic Notre-Dame church was the city’s sole building to survive the bombings of WWII. However, the church’s façade and roof as well as one of the twin towers were totally destroyed. After the war, the religious building was restored and is now a popular attraction.
Several Norman regions boast landscapes of tranquil countryside characterised by apple orchards and pasture for dairy cattle. Normandy produces and exports a wide range of internationally acclaimed dairy products and gastronomists will appreciate the delightful cheeses including: Livarot, Camembert, Pont l'Evêque, Neufchâtel, Brillat-Savarin, Boursin and Petit Suisse.
Normandy, wonderfully positioned along France’s English Channel coast between Picardy to the east and Brittany to the west, is rewarding to explore by hire car. St Lo represents several local car rental firms but it is best to pre-book car hire online in advance to ensure the vehicle of your choice is available at the time of your arrival.
