Car Hire St. Albans - Mini guide to St. Albans
Verulamium was the name given to this town of significant importance in Roman Britain, remains of which form the basis of the modern-day citys chief attractions with the countrys largest roman museum and best-preserved Roman theatre. The city centre is also home to many well-preserved and unusual buildings dating back to medieval times.
The city centres 600-year-old Clock Tower is the only medieval town belfry in England. Climb its 93 very small spiral stairs for fine views of the Cathedral and the 100-acre Verulamium Park, built upon the original site of the Roman town. A walk 20 minutes through the park to award-winning Verulamium Museum, home to magnificent mosaics and recreated rooms, gives the visitor an opportunity to discover the life and times of a major Roman city. The remarkable open-air Roman Theatre is nearby, and adjacent are foundations of a Roman town house, a sacred shrine and a row of Roman shops.
St. Albans has one of the widest varieties of cafes, restaurants and bistros throughout the town, but at the High Street end of Verulam Road, a short distance from the landmark Clock Tower, has many of the citys finest establishments.
With its excellent surrounding road network, St. Albans is never far away from many regional attractions, and is only 18 miles north of Londons bright lights. A short drive to the north-west is Redbournbury Mill, a beautifully preserved 18th century watermill. As well as being a picturesque attraction itself, you can also join the Views of the Ver Valley Walk public footpath which runs alongside.
St. Albans is due north of London, and surrounded by the M25 motorway to the south, and the M1 and A1(M) motorways either side, making Luton Airport less than 30 minutes away. Luton Airport provides access to a wide range of European destinations, with Heathrow airport little more than an hour away giving a wider range of international flights. Frequent commuter trains from several North London rail stations make St Albans very accessible at all times of the day.
