Car Hire Split - Mini guide to Split
Easily the largest city in the region and stretching across Croatia's Dalmatian coast is the seaport of Split. With its long winding oceanfront and Romanesque architecture, it not surprisingly attracts hordes of tourists to its many sights.
In the old town lie the ruins of the city's famous palace. Built in the 4th century, it is thought to be one the best preserved sites in Europe. Also in the old town you'll find the Mestrovic Gallery (sculptures by Ivan Mestrovic) and the informative archaeological museum, which contains Greek, Roman and medieval artefacts.
Walking around town, you will see the Temple of Jupiter, which was part of the Roman Emperor Diocletian's palace. The palace is lavishly decorated around all of its walls and contains some works that are a must see. Alternatively, you might want to climb Marjan hill and take in the great panorama of the city and the sea.
On the eastern side of the old town are the local food market and an abundance of restaurants to suit all tastes. For traditional Croatian meat and fish dishes, you should try the Sarajevo. There are some vibrant cafes on the water front, the Riva Café is a favourite with tourists and locals alike.
Split Airport is situated 16kms west of town, and the #37 bus will take you into town. If you want to come by ferry, the ferry terminal is five minutes from the centre of town, and receives domestic and international arrivals. Around the corner from the ferry terminal are the bus and train stations.
