Speyer, the city in the Rhineland-Palatinate region of Germany is unique due to a domination practiced by the Speyer Cathedral and a few other churches besides the Altpörtel or the Old town gate. The cathedral houses the tombs of eight of the former emperors and kings of Germany and also exhibits the signs of the French invasions during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Speyer received its adornments during the Wilhelmian era. The numerous stately buildings stand as evidence to the fact; that also includes the neo-gothic Memorial Church of Gedächtniskirche; the Historical Museum of the Palatinate; the Protestant Consistory; the Bishop’s seat and the Humanistic Grammar School besides the Wilhelmian train station. But nothing can perhaps grab more attention than the monument erected in the Speyer cemetery in memory of the assassins of the Separatists’ Leader Franz Josef Heinz.

Speyer has a piece of Nazi history to exhibit as well. Gleichschaltung took place in Speyer in the year of 1933 but went under the French rule till the Federal Republic of Germany was established in 1949. By the middle of the last century, Speyer experienced an economic upswing; it is since then Speyer started developing into one of the important tourist spots of Germany.
