Car Hire Southport - Mini guide to Southport
Southport is one of Britain's few remaining traditional Victorian seaside resorts with a blend of elegant boulevards, great live entertainment, superb sport, lovely flower filled surroundings and fine quality accommodation.
The Southport Seafront is a focal point for visitors and the local community. It incorporates a variety of parks and gardens, including one of the largest marine lakes in the country.
Southport's local and natural history is documented in the Botanic Gardens Museum while the Steamport Transport Museum is devoted to historic trains, trams, buses and other vehicles. In the Atkinson Art Gallery you will find a fine collection of 19th and 20th century paintings. Meols Hall is Southport's historical Manor House, dating back to the 12th century.
In the centre of town is the world famous Lord Street, a mile-long boulevard offering famous brands and specialist shops. Adjacent to Lord Street are a number of elegant glass-vaulted shopping arcades. Southport comes alive in the evening, with a casino, cinema, theatres and host of lively pubs, clubs and bars. Visit the Pleasureland amusement park for white-knuckle rides. For a wonderful view of Southport, experience the Traumatizer, the UKs tallest, fastest, suspended looping coaster.
Southport and the Sefton Coast have 22 miles of stunning coastline, with miles of golden sands. The 21 mile long Sefton Coastal Footpath can either be enjoyed as a challenging one day walk or broken down into shorter sections. Running from Southport to Crosby, it covers duneland, farmland and pine woodland, with wonderful views of the sea and wide beaches.
Trains leave Southport Station every hour to London Euston Station (duration 3 hours 40 min). Most trains go via Wigan Wallgate and Wigan North Western Stations. From the south, via the M6 to jct 26; take the M58 to Ormskirk (junc 3) then follow the A570 to Southport. From the north, exit the M6 at jct 31, follow the A59 to Preston, then the A565 to Southport.
