Set in northern France, in the Picardie region, Soissons is one of the most ancient towns in France. Just a short drive away from Paris, many visitors flock to Soissons to soak up the long and colourful history of this area.
Soissons’ beginnings date back to well before the Romans, making the area rich in archeological sites. Back in the Middle Ages, Soissons played an important role as the capital of one of the four kingdoms under the rule of the Merovingian Kings.
The highlight of Soissons is its religious buildings. The Saint-Gervais et Saint-Protais Cathedral and Saint Jean des Vignes Abbey, dating back to the 12th century, are considered to be one of the most important historical and religious buildings in France. There are plenty more churches, cathedrals and abbeys dotted around Soissons, most of which are within easy walking distance.
Once you have seen the religious sites, then either seek out one of the numerous squares or ‘Place’ in French, such as Place de la Republique, to relax and enjoy some coffee or simple food. Once you have regained energy, venture out to the Pavillon des Arquebusiers, Chateau de Montgobert or go shopping at the Le Marche Couvert, which looks strangely like a UFO.
Soissons is ideally located just off the E46/N2 Motorway, an easy drive from Reims or Paris.
