Car Hire Sint Maarten - Mini guide to Sint Maarten
Sint Maarten is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Caribbean. This island is divided between a Dutch side and a smaller French side and is ruled by these countries. Its powdery white beaches, resorts, and Casinos explain why it has become such an attractive destination.
Philipsburg is Sint Maartens main town. It is located on a narrow stretch of land that separates the Great Salt Pond from the Great Bay and is very much a modern tourist town. On Frontstreet you can purchase anything from jewelry to electronics to Danish porcelain, as well as go try you hand at a casino.
For something a little more cultural, you can go to the Sint Maarten Museum, which offers the history of the island from before colonization to modern days. Also in Phillipsburg is Fort Amsterdam, built in 1631, it was the first fort made by the Dutch in the Caribbean. Due to invading Spaniards there is little left of the fort but ruins and the small church the Spaniards left behind. Just on the north side of the Great Salt Pond is the Sint Maarten Zoo and Botanical Garden, which is a good place to familiarize yourself with local flora and fauna
The island is primarily a leisure destination. Inside and outside of Philipsburg are many resorts, casinos, restaurants, bars, beaches and everything a tropical traveler could ask for. However, if you want some quiet there are also secluded coves and places available for good diving.
Sint Maarten is easy to explore by automobile. For something a little less frequented, drive to Cupecoy Bay which has clean white sands and some secluded coves. Also, just on the Dutch side of the island is Dawn Beach, widely considered the islands most pleasant and beautiful beach.
From Philipsburg, direct flights are available to New York, Miami, Paris, Amsterdam and many cities around the Caribbean.
