Sigonella is popular because of its reputation as a US Navy Installation Base. It is nicknamed the ‘Hub of the Med” and is a NATO Base. Sigonellais the Italian Air Force base in Sicily, Italy. It is geographically situated 10 miles west of the city of Catania and 15 miles south of Mount Etna.
Sigonella is strategically located in the proximity of the center of the Mediterranean Sea. For this reason NASSIG is deemed apt to sustain operations by the U.S. 6th Fleet, other U.S. military units, and U.S. allies and coalition partners. There are 2 prominent sectors here, NAS I and NAS II. NAS I contain the Navy Exchange and Commissary, the school, homes of squadron commanders and other entertainment facilities. NAS II is used as a service base and includes runways, operations and the majority of tenant commands.
The first major flood at Sigonella's occurred in mid-September 1959. It was so immense that the Dittaino Bridge between NAF II and NAF I was six feet under water and all traffic was passed through Catania. Sigonella was selected a Naval Air Station in the 1980s.
There have been major developments in the recent past. Defense Depot Sigonella Italy on NAS II was started on April 1, 2004 by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) to serve as a supply base for the Mediterranean. It also supplies fuel and property disposal from NAS II.
Very recently, Sigonella suffered its second major flood in mid December 2005. The extent of the flood forced an emergency evacuation of over 400 service members’ Adequate precautions prevented the repetition of such an event the following year.
It is believed the Sigonella has and may still be used as a transfer station for ‘persons of interest in the war on terror’ also known as the black bag inmates.
