Car Hire Selinunte - Mini guide to Selinunte

In the historical region of Sicily lies the city of Selinunte. It was founded in the seventh century BC but was destroyed in 409 BC when its citizens were at engaged in the war between Syracuse and Athens. Left behind were ruins of many temples, among them Temple G which was the fourth largest Greek temple in the world. The citadel of the city, its acropolis, was set on high ground between two rivers that surrounded the city. From the top of the acropolis, one can look out over the ocean and view many of the same sights that an ancient Sicilian Greek could see.

If you are looking to see the main ruins in this area, it would be best to hire a car and explore this vicinity at your leisure. All the Temples are known by the letters A-G and you will be able to see some that lie completely in ruins and some that have been partially rebuilt. The temples were erected to the gods Apollo and Hera and other deities worshipped by the Greeks.

The Cava di Cusa is not very far from the temple ruins. This is the quarry from which the stone was moved in order to build the temples. The drive to the quarry is lined with columns that were partially carved and now abandoned as the city lies in ruins.

Located five kilometers from the ruins is the beautiful Hotel Paradise Beach Resort. Offering 248 rooms as well as golf and a private beach, this hotel offers access to Selinunte and the surrounding sites. The hotel offers cable/satellite TV, air conditioning, as well as many other in-room amenities. The restaurant serves a complimentary buffet breakfast each morning as well as buffet style dining or outdoor dining. In either capacity, there are selections of Sicilian and international menu items to tempt you palate.

Looking for you next getaway? Looking for history as well as elegance? Search no further. Selinunte provides privacy and luxury with historical sites abounding for a great vacation.
