Mini guide to Sedan
Sedan
Set in north-eastern France, roughly 100 miles (160kms) from Paris, Sedan is right on the border with Belgium. From Sedan it is an easy drive to explore Luxembourg, as well as the western part of Germany. Sedan is famous for its castle, and was also the birthplace of French tennis star Yannick Noah.
Sedan is located in the Champagne-Ardenne region and has a long military history, dating back to the Franco-Prussian War and WWII. The town sits on a peninsula on the Meuse River and, founded in 1424, had its economic origins in the textile industry.
The Castle of Sedan looms over the town. The French claim that it is the largest fortified medieval castle in Europe, but only a small portion of this large complex remains intact today. Military enthusiasts visit Sedan as it was the birthplace of two Marshals of France and was also the location of the famous Battle of Sedan, where Napoleon surrendered.
Other attractions in town are pretty much centered around the town’s military history. These include the Last Cartridge House, the La Marfee observation point and the MacMahon Cross and the French Military Cemetery.
Sedan itself is quite compact and most areas can easily be explored on foot. In terms of public transportation, visitors can use the local bus or train. However, with the town’s proximity to the N43 (or E44/E46) motorway, a hire car is a convenient way to explore the town and surrounding areas. Car hire for Sedan can easily and conveniently be booked online.
