The architecturally beautiful town of Wismar is an ideal tourist location for those seeking culture, and perfect to drive around in a hire car. Wismar has many German Gothic buildings with Romanesque features (some even date back as far as the fourteenth century). In 2002 the town earned its place amongst the top places to visit in the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The central old town has a grand marketplace of over 1,000 square metres with the Wasserkunst at its heart, an elaborate wrought-iron fountain imported from Holland in 1602. Also to be found in the square is the Alter Schedde Gothic warehouse, which dates back to 1380, with its gorgeous red brick exterior and black stone window frames.

Other sites of interest around the town, include the old historic port that is now open to the public. Visitors can take a short ferry trip to the nearby island of Poel that has the only remaining seawater fortress in Germany, even if it is in ruins.

A short distance from Wismar is the Technical Museum which is housed in a renovated part of the old Schwerin Castle. It has exhibits on cars, civil and military aircraft (especially those of the first half of the 20th Century) and also displays models of the piston steam engine. There is also a range of household electrical exhibits showing how the technology in our homes has slowly evolved through time. The museum is open all year round, but times and collections vary so please check ahead in the tourist office to avoid disappointment.
