Mini guide to Schwerin
SchwerinSchwerin is a town surrounded by lakes, of which Schweriner See is the largest. Traces of settlement are found here dating back to the 11th century. Henry the Lionheart conquered Schwerin in 1160 and a castle was built by him where the town developed accordingly. Schwerin became a part of the Duchy of Mecklenburg in 1358. After a series of events, the status of Schwerin was re-established at around 1837. After 1918, Schwerin became the capital of The Free State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, as the Grand Duke renounced during the German Revolution.
The Schwerin Castle, situated on an island in the lake of Schweriner See, is a great landmark of Schwerin. Although it was used by many Dukes over the centuries, it is now the seat of the state parliament (Landtag). The Schwerin Cathedral was built in a Brick Gothic style between 1260 and 1416, and still stands tall in Schwerin. The State Art Museum was built in 1877-1882 and it shows the collection of Dutch and German art dating between the 15th and 19th century. It houses works by Rembrandt, Cranach the Elder, and Rubens. Porcelain works and court paintings of famous German artists are also found here. The television mast which is termed as the Schwerin-Zippendorf and the Town Hall also attract a lot of tourists visiting Schwerin.
