Mini guide to Schweinfurt
SchweinfurtSchweinfurt is located at Lower Franconia. It is part of Bavaria, Germany. The river Main flows beside the city and is interlinked with various bridges. Schweinfurt had the manufacturing unit of ball bearings of Nazi Germany during the beginning of World War II. After being destroyed during the war, it was assumed that the destruction of factories would affect the production of aircrafts and war tanks very badly. The United States Army and their air force were highly affected. Consequent efforts were made to sprinkle the existing machinery. Luftwaffe had predicted its threat and accordingly started to disperse many aircrafts along the corridor to Schweinfurt.
Schweinfurt was raided in February 1944. It became to be known as “Big Week”. Schweinfurt recovered quickly after the war and sub-urban areas of Bergl, Hochfeld and Steinberg were developed to accommodate the increasing number of inhabitants. The city started building the new town hall in 1954 and they celebrated the 700th and 500th anniversaries of the two earlier destructions, along with the reconstructions of World War II. American and German veterans joined hands and erected a war memorial in 1998.
The main landmark of Schweinfurt includes the Gothic Town Hall built in between 1570 to 1572. The Old Gymnasium and the museum Georg Schäfer are other places of historical importance in Schweinfurt worth visiting.
