Schwaebisch GmuendSchwaebisch Gmuend is a town within the state of Baden Wuttemberg, Germany. It is located in the eastern part of the state, and has over 62,000 inhabitants. The town lies on River Rems, and is on the northern side of Swabian Jura Mountains. It is the second largest town within the Ostalbkreis and region of East Wuttemberg. It administers its own rural district, after the district reform on 1st January, 1973. The rural part was called Schwäbisch Gmünd.
Traces of its first settlement are found since the 2nd century A.D and it was inhabited by Roman soldiers. Later in the 3rd century, the Alemans settled replacing the Romans. In the middle of the 12th century Schwäbisch Gmünd was founded. It remained a Free Imperial City from 1268 and in 1803 it passed under Wuttemberg.
From the 17th century, the town was the home of gold and silver handicrafts producers. The Forschungsinstitut für Edelmetalle und Metallchemie, an institution for precious metalwork is in this town. Industries of automotive parts, Swiss toiletries, medicines, and glass are prevalent in this town.
Baden Wuttemberg has opened the State Grammer School (Landesgymnasium für Hochbegabte) in 2004, bringing more people into the Schwaebisch Gmuend region.
