Car Hire Savona - Mini guide to Savona

Located in the northern Italian region of Liguria, Savona is a seaport and commune that is situated at sea level, the Mediterranean Sea of course. Savona has enjoyed immense importance as a popular Italian iron industry with its numerous iron-works foundries, railway and shipbuilding workshops, engineering shops and brass foundries.

Historiacly its references have always been made in context to its extended struggle against Genoa. Because of their geographical location, the Savonese built a harbor way back in the 12th century. However in the 16th century the Genoese chose to destroy it by simply sinking it. Their reason was justified because they believed that Francis I of France had planned to use it as a seat for Mediterranean trade.

Much later in 1746 Savona was taken over by the then Sardinian king but later it was given back to Genoa with the Aix-la-Chapelle treaty.

The fortress Priamar is located near the Rocca di San Giorgio. It was built after the downfall of Savona in Genoese hands in 1528. It was built in 1542 upon the area that had held the old cathedral and city at that time. It has also been used as a military, and civilian prison. In fact Giuseppe Mazzini had also been imprisoned here.

The famous Sistine Chapel, known also as the Cappella Sistina was built between 1480-1483. The chapel is made on the lines of the chapel for Cardinal Pietro Riario in the Santi Apostoli Basilica in Rome. It was reconstructed between 1765-1767. A fun fact about the city being it’s neighborhood houses a property that si documented to have belonged to Domenico Colombo who incidentally happens to be Christopher Columbus’s father. Christopher Columbus is known to have lived in Savona before he began his search for other lands. Apart from this there’s numerous other churches to be found in this Christian city.
