About 30 km out of Riyadh is one of the largest camel markets in the Middle East. The ruins of Diraiyah, lying 30 km north of the city centre, was the kingdom's first capital and is now the country's most popular archaeological site.
Taif lies in the mountains above Mecca and attracts visitors for its cool weather and scenery. The central mosque is a good example of Islamic architecture and the Shubra Palace is the citys museum. The Tailor's Souk is a sandstone alleyway of ancient shops nestled between the town's modern buildings.
The plains of Madain Salah in the north west contain some of the best preserved rock tombs. The Qasr Farid is the largest of the tombs and the Qasr al-Bint is a group of tombs carved into an outcrop of rock.
The Asir National Park runs from the southern Red Sea coast to the desert areas east of the mountains. Its made up of many smaller parks each with camping areas. There are mountains in the north-west and plains in the south-east with the Al-Soudah, lying near the summit of Saudi Arabia's highest mountain Jebel Sawdah, being the most fascinating part of the park. The town of Abha, close by, provides beautiful mountain and forest scenery as well as the Shada Palace museum.
