The ‘prairie province’ of Saskatchewan is named after the Plains Indian word ‘kisiskatchewan’, meaning 'swiftly flowing river', which refers to the Saskatchewan River. Saskatchewan is probably best known for the unmistakable beauty of its prairies with waving wheat fields, shimmering horizons and brilliant sunsets.
In the summer, fields of golden wheat, barley and bright yellow canola dominate the open landscape. In the winter, a vast blue sky ascends from pristine blankets of freshly fallen snow.
Saskatchewan’s largest city is Saskatoon, a vibrant university town that boasts more than enough attractions to keep visitors entertained. Spots worth checking out are the Western Development Museum, the Ukrainian Museum of Canada, the Saskatoon Zoo and the Wanuskewin Heritage Park.
If you’re feeling active, explore the Meewasin Valley Trail, which encompasses 21kms of riverbank trails through the heart of the city. Alternatively, for a more relaxing afternoon, head to the Broadway shopping district and sip on a cappuccino in one of the cafés. Also, be sure to catch one of the many festivals that take place throughout the year.
The provincial capital of Regina is a comfortable, if unremarkable, place to spend a couple of days, with the offbeat attraction of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Museum and the opportunity to explore some of southern Saskatchewan's less familiar destinations, such as the Big Muddy Badlands and the Grasslands National Park.
Wascana Center, in downtown Regina, features six distinct parks plus a number of popular attractions, including Saskatchewan Science Center/IMAX Theatre, Royal Saskatchewan Museum and Mackenzie Art Gallery. The city also boasts excellent shopping, restaurants and Casino Regina in the historic Union Center.
