Car Hire Sardinia - Mini guide to Sardinia
With rugged landscape historical ports and ancient resort towns, Sardinia is a beautiful and unspoilt Mediterranean islands getaway. Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans, Pisans, Genoese and Spaniards have all contributed to the unique character of todays Sardis.
Cagliari, the capital, is surprisingly attractive, with an interesting medieval section and a beautiful beach. The main attractions here are the archeological museum with its unique collection of nuraghic statuettes, the city walls with their two Pisan towers looking down over the port, and the cathedral. There is also an impressive amphitheatre ruin. 40km out of town at Nora, is the most complete ancient site on the island. The Spanish-tinged town of Iglésias makes an appealing inland destination during its flamboyant Easter festivities.
Other nearby attractions include; the magnificent and relatively unspoiled Costa Verde coastline, the beaches and grottoes around the tourist enclave of Alghero, and the trekking and traditional culture offered in Nuoro province. Alghero has been popular with British tourists for decades, and has a friendly atmosphere. It also has a distinctly Spanish character, resulting from a long history of Catalan colonisation.
Nuoro is the biggest town in Sardinia's interior, it also makes a useful stopover for visiting some of the remoter mountain areas, in particular the Gennargentu range, covering the heart of the island.
