Exploring Sardinia
With plenty of secluded bays and beaches to seek out, dramatic coastline to discover and a rugged interior, Sardinia is perfect for car hire.
The Costa Smeralda is Sardinia's best-known resort area and lives up to its reputation for opulence, though it isnt cheap. Many prefer to visit for the day and slum it elsewhere on the island.
All the island's coasts are worth a visit; from the archipelago of La Maddalena to the beaches of Capo Testa at Santa Teresa, as far as the Emerald Coast, to Golfo Aranci and Olbia. In the south are the splendid dunes of Pistis at Torre die Corsari and of Piscinas at Ingurtosu (Arbus); as well as the metalliferous limestone cliffs of the Iglesiente, with truly unexpected and spectacular views.
In the western corner of the province of Sassari, there is Alghero with its beaches and the limestone reefs of Capo Caccia, and Stintino, with the unequalled colour of the sea at La Pelosa beach.
Perhaps most striking of all, however, are the remnants of Sardinia's only significant native culture, known as the nuraghic civilization after the 7000-odd nuraghi that litter the landscape. These mysterious, stone-built constructions are found throughout the island.
Thankfully undiscovered by package tours, and enjoying both French and Italian and even Spanish and Moorish influences, Sardinia is perfect for hiking, sailing or simply relaxing on the beach. Hiring a car to admire the spectacular coastal scenery is also rewarding.
