Car Hire Santiago de Queretaro - Mini guide to Santiago de Queretaro

Santiago de Queretaro, a city filled with remnants of a turbulent past, is situated 219kms north of Mexico City. Historically and architecturally one of the most important places in Mexico, the city offers a pleasant array of sights, including temples, mansions and palaces.

Art aficionados should head to the local Art Museum, housed in a building which was formerly the Convent of San Agustin. Dating back to 1731, the building is a fine example of Baroque style architecture of the 18th century. Inside, you’ll find a good collection of classic and modern artwork.

The temple and convent of Santa Rosa de Viterbo, currently housing the Regional Museum, contains paintings, sculptures and furniture dating back to the 18th century.

A must-see in the city is the impressive aqueduct, which was constructed in 1735 to supply drinking water to the area’s residents. This giant edifice is made up of 74 arches that reach heights of 23m and lengths of 1,280m.

In Mexico, the city squares always afford the best chance to see local life unfolding. The sublimely beautiful Square of Independence boasts Spanish style traditional porticos and harmonious architecture and ambience, and is considered by many to be the most attractive in the country.

The Cerro de las Campanas, a verdant hill that has been converted into a beautiful park with playgrounds, an artificial lake, a theatre and the City Museum, is well worth visiting. There are two permanent exhibitions at the museum: the Cultural Heritage of Humanity Hall and a section devoted to the Virgen del Pueblito.

The City Foundation Anniversary (July 25) affords the chance to sample traditional cuisine, see local arts and crafts, and enjoy music and cultural displays scattered throughout the historic downtown area. The religious holidays of Christmas and Easter also burn with the festival spirit.

The best driving route to Santiago de Queretaro from Mexico City is the super toll road 57D. From San Miguel, take Highway 111 to 57D, then turn right and follow the signs to the city. Bus service to Santiago de Queretaro is offered from Mexico City at the airport, or from the northern bus terminal, known locally as Central del Norte. The closest international airport to Santiago de Queretaro is Benito Juarez International Airport in Mexico City.
