Santiago de Queretaro, a city filled with remnants of a turbulent past, is situated 219kms north of Mexico City. Historically and architecturally one of the most important places in Mexico, the city offers a pleasant array of sights, including temples, mansions and palaces.
Art aficionados should head to the local Art Museum, housed in a building which was formerly the Convent of San Agustin. Dating back to 1731, the building is a fine example of Baroque style architecture of the 18th century. Inside, youll find a good collection of classic and modern artwork.
The temple and convent of Santa Rosa de Viterbo, currently housing the Regional Museum, contains paintings, sculptures and furniture dating back to the 18th century.
A must-see in the city is the impressive aqueduct, which was constructed in 1735 to supply drinking water to the areas residents. This giant edifice is made up of 74 arches that reach heights of 23m and lengths of 1,280m.

The best driving route to Santiago de Queretaro from Mexico City is the super toll road 57D. From San Miguel, take Highway 111 to 57D, then turn right and follow the signs to the city.
