Mini guide to San Marino

A famous stop on the Formula One circuit, the capital of the tiny republic of San Marino is also renowned for its superb architectural heritage, beautiful beaches and charming atmosphere, making it an intriguing and unique holiday destination.

The highlight of a visit to San Marino is to explore the ancient fortresses and battlements located on the top of the imposing Mount Titano, rising high above the city. There are three main towers, the La Rocca (First Tower), the Cesta (Second Tower) and the Montale (Third Tower), each pentagonal in cross-section and interconnected by ramparts which afford stunning views of the city and surrounding coastline. The 11th century La Rocca was carved directly out of the stone of the mountain and features a magnificent bell tower. The Cesta, dating back to the 13th century, is the highest of the three structures and houses the interesting San Marino Museum of Antique Weapons. The Montale was also erected during the 13th century, and, like its siblings, was turned into a prison after its defensive role was made redundant.

Down in the city centre are several churches of note, the most spectacular and important being the Basilica del Santo, which houses the remains and artifacts of San Marino, the patron saint of the republic. Parts of the structure, in particular the bell tower, date back to the 7th century, however the main building was constructed in the 19th century. Nearby are the charming churches of Chiesa di San Francesco and San Pietro. The Palazzo Publico is a stunning example of 14th century architecture, and its Piazza della Liberta square offers magnificent views of Montefeltro, the church of San Francesco, and La Rocca.

San Marino has ample first-class accommodation and dozens of restaurants with sumptuous menus. There is a wide range of nightlife activities, from quiet cafes and bars to exciting clubs, pubs and discos.

Out of town, the road to the beautiful Italian resort of Rimini is a pleasant drive through spectacular coastal scenery. On route, be sure to stop at the excellent Museo di Auto d'Epoca, with its extensive collection of rare automobiles.

Rimini-San Marino International Airport is served by most major carriers, and shuttle services into the city are frequent and reliable. The Italian rail network is also efficient means of getting to and from busier centre such as Florence and Venice, with their international airports.
