Somewhat like New York City, San Jose – capital of Costa Rica – too is laid out with interconnecting parallel streets. Those running east to west are Avenues and north to south ones are Streets. Two main roads bisecting the city are Central Street and Central Avenue. To make life simpler, street numbers go up in even numbers to the east of Central Street and in odd numbers westward. For Central Avenue, numbers climb oddly to the north and evenly to the south. It is impossible to find one lost!
A long chunk of Central Avenue stretching over eight blocks sports a very useful mall reserved for pedestrians. This section coincides with the city’s busy and important financial district. A unique attraction of the pedestrian mall is the presence of colourful hawkers’ kiosks. With energy and enthusiasm, they invite passers by to halt briefly and buy the bric-a-brac on offer. Usually these cover touristy products like coffee mugs, key chains, tee shirts and lottery tickets too!
Shopping at this open-air bazaar can be fun. Hawkers apart, the area are a pedestrian’s delight also because the avenue is lined with flower and coffee shops and they offer you opportunities for a welcome outdoor break. Central Avenue leads on to the one-of-its-kind Gold Museum and the country’s National Theatre.
The bad news is that for unknown reasons, street names and house numbers in San Jose are rarely marked. In addition, pedestrians have right of way only in theory. Reality is pedestrians have to dodge through unruly motor traffic. So be safe!
