Mini guide to Salzkotten
SalzkottenSalzkotten is located in Paderborn, a part of North Rhine Westphalia, Germany. The name Salzkotten originated from the former salt productions, which was carried out at the salty waters of rivers around the town. Salzkotten was established around 1247, but traces have been found since the 1160’s. Several farms and villages were brought together and rebuilt to finally form the town of Salzkotten. It is situated 12km towards the south west part of Paderborn and you will found it is made up of various rocky mountain areas and many forests.
Munsterland and Soester Borde are adjacent and nine independent villages were merged with Salzkotten in 1975. The villages include Mantinghausen, Niederntudorf, Oberntudorf, Scharmede, Schwelle, Thüle, Upsprunge, Verlar and Verne. The Schwelle consisted of 3 small villages and was commonly termed as United States of Holsen-Schwelle-Winkhausen.
Around 40 percent of the population is below or around the age of 30. The economy of the town is based on mining, machine manufacture, services and electronics. Production of food is the main industry in this area, as well as refinery.
Salzkotten celebrates three festivals annually. The Salzerfest is a salt festival, and Schutzenfest is a fair boasting shooting matches. This festival is even celebrated in many different places around the country. The Hederauenfest is celebrated towards the end of the year.
