Mini guide to Salzgitter
SalzgitterSalzgitter is an independent city and lies between Hildesheim and Braunschweig. The city is in the south-eastern part of Lower Saxony. Wolfsburg, Braunschweig and Salzgitter together form a metropolitan area with a population of 109,142. The Salzgitter-Lebenstedt Street is the main shopping hub in the city while the central business district is at Salzgitter-Bad. A tributary connects the Elbe-Seitenkanal and the Mittellandkanal (canals) with the city. Hanover and Braunschweig are the nearest metropolises.
The city monument is called the Turm der Arbeit, or “the tower of work”. This tower reflects the adversities faced by the forced workers and the concentration camp prisoners during National Socialism. Other buildings of historical importance are the town hall built during 1959 to 1963 in the “far-eastern” style. Städtisches Museum Schloss Salder is an interesting museum and attracts tourists from all over the world.
Salzgitter has no theatres and no building is used as a substitute for one. However, several representations are found at various places, of which Salzgitter-Bad is one of them. Various stage acts and plays are put up and attract audiences ranging between 100 and 500 people. Musical performances are irregular.
Events and festivals dominate the city between May to July, of which the museum festival and the old town festival in Salzgitter-Bad attracts the biggest number of tourists.
