Salzburg can easily be covered on foot and is rather compact, but the nearby Alpine region offers fantastic scenery, making it worth hiring a car for day trips to Innsbruck and the St Anton valley.
Several kilometers south of Salzburg is Hellbrunn Palace, situated at the foot of Hellbrun mountain. This spacious and elegant palace was built in 1615 with a distinctly Italian style and features an amazing Wasserspeiele (water park),
specifically designed to soak visitors with secret fountains and ponds.
The Eisriesenwelt Höhle (Ice Caves) in Werfen is one of Austrias top attractions and claims to be the largest of their kind in the world. Some of the interiors are enormous and visitors on the limited tours can discover some the bizarre ice formations found inside. Open only during the summer, the caves are about an hours drive south of Salzburg.
The Bad Dürrnberg Salt Mine in Hallein has a history that dates back to Celtic settlement here, and mining activity has been traced as far back as 4500 years ago. Salzburg prospered as a result, and today Hallein is a unique tourist attraction and offers an insightful look at salt mining.
Wolfgangsee Lake is the most accessible of the many lovely lakes in the Salzkammergut lakeland district, east of the city. Its popular in the summer, particularly the resorts of St.Wolfgang and St Gilgen. Rising behind St Gilgen is the distinctive Zwölferhorn mountain.
