Salzburg WA Mozart International Airport lies even closer to Austria's border with Germany, just over a mile away, than it does to the famous city it serves, which is just two miles away. Two trolleybus lines are the airport's main public transportation links to the city. Passengers who choose car rental in Salzburg Airport are also just a leisurely drive away from the nearby Ski Amadé region, which boasts more interlinked ski resorts than any other region of Europe.

Who to Book With
The Salzburg Airport car rental desks contain internationally known chains like Europcar and Avis, alongside local car rental companies such as Buchbinder and Megadrive Autovermietung. The desks are situated on the airport car park's ground floor, which is connected to the main terminal building by a covered walkway. Advance booking is essential during the region's busy ski season.

Driving
Most roads in Austria and neighbouring Germany are well maintained and easy to drive on, but all Austrian motorways have been toll roads since 1997. A vignette tax sticker is required to drive on motorways and is already displayed on most Austrian rental cars, but those without vignettes can purchase one at any Austrian border crossing. Finding a parking place is the biggest challenge when driving within Salzburg itself, especially in the city's Old Town. Parking in bus lanes usually results in the vehicle being towed and a hefty fine. Reflective safety vests and four winter tires, at least two of which must come with snow chains, are required on all vehicles on Austrian roads from 1 November to 15 April.

Transport

Trolleybuses take just under half an hour to reach both Salzburg's Hauptbahnhof rail station and the historic Old Town from Salzburg Airport, but rental cars can travel this brief distance in an even shorter time period. The airport's other public transportation options are two limousine companies, a large fleet of taxis and shuttle buses to various Austrian and Bavarian ski resorts.

Trains
Salzburg Airport may lack a direct rail connection to other parts of the city, but city bus number 2 travels regularly every 10 minutes between the main Hauptbahnhof rail station and the airport. Passengers can then travel on to several other destinations throughout Austria, Germany and the rest of Europe from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof. Austrian Railways is the country's leading rail network.

Taxis
The taxis parked in front of the main Salzburg Airport terminal will transport passengers not only into the city, but to numerous Ski Amadé resorts across Austria and Germany. Taxi cost depends on both distance and time spent inside the vehicle therefore fares are typically more expensive during high traffic times. The Salzburg Taxi Service has drivers which can communicate in German, French and English.

Buses
Although the main StadtBus service which travels between Salzburg and the airport is the number 2, several more StadtBuses travel throughout the city. Some StadtBuses are powered by fuel, while others are electric O-buses/ All one-way StadtBus tickets are an affordable £1.85 for adults and £1.30 for children. StadtBus 24-hour tickets cost £4, while tickets valid for a week are £10. POST-BUSes depart regularly from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof to the city's surrounding communities. Bus tickets can be purchased at the airport, the rail station or directly from the bus driver. ÖBB Postbus is the leading bus service which travels across the city of Salzburg, while Salzburger Verkehrsverbund buses travel throughout the city's namesake state.

Facilities

Terminals
Salzburg Airport may have two terminals, but the vast majority of the over 1.5 million passengers still use the older Terminal 1. The much newer Terminal 2 is only open on Saturday and is reserved for budget and charter flights filled with passengers on package ski holidays. Both terminals have arrivals areas on their ground floors and departures areas on their upper floors. Currently, a total of 130 European destinations can be reached directly from this airport.

Parking
There are more than 1,920 parking spaces inside Salzburg Airport's multi-floor parking garage as well as 1,230 outdoor parking spots within a five-minute drive from both terminals. Visitors can park their vehicles in any of the 137 short-term parking spaces for up to 24 hours, while long-term parking is available at both the P4 multi-floor car park and three outdoor car parks. Daily and weekly long-term parking rates are available, but one car park, P5, is only open in summer. Designated disabled persons’ parking places are available near the airport’s entrances and exits.

Wi-Fi
Freewave Internet provides free wireless internet access throughout the shopping, eating, departures and check-in areas at both of Salzburg Airport’s terminals.

Information Services
Both Salzburg Airport terminals contain airport information desks in their Arrivals areas. Airport information staff are fluent in both German and English.

Accessibility
Disabled passengers can ask staff for help when entering the terminal. Adapted telephones, toilets and elevators are among Salzburg Airport's amenities for disabled passengers. Parking places reserved for disabled passengers are situated close to the airport's exit and entry points.

Restaurants and Bars
The ground floors of both terminals are the best places to grab quick bites to eat at Salzburg Airport's several bars and cafés, such as the Ring Bakery, while most formal restaurants are found on the first floors of both terminals. Catering services are also available.

Money and ATMs
ATMs and currency exchanges are readily available at both Salzburg Airport terminals. The Salzburger Sparkasse Bank is open seven days per week.

The Heinemann Duty Free shop in the Departures lounge is just one of many Salzburg Airport shopping opportunities. Most other airport shops are situated in the designated shopping concourse bordering the Arrivals and Departures areas. Passengers can purchase Boutique Alice fashions, Juweller Kemmetinger jewellery, freshly baked Ring Bakery bread and many more unique items.
