Car Hire Salford - Mini guide to Salford
Salford will forever be immortalised in the paintings of LS Lowry but today the city bears little resemblance to the place that Lowry knew. The former docks on the famous Manchester Ship Canal have been completely redeveloped and now offer theatres, galleries, designer shops and stylish waterfront apartments.
The jewel in the crown is The Lowry, Salfords answer to the Sydney Opera House, voted 2001 Building of the Year. It houses the worlds finest collection of LS Lowrys paintings together with contemporary exhibitions and interactive artworks. The centre also has two theatres.
Just across the footbridge on the opposite bank of the Ship Canal is the Imperial War Museum North. For those with an interest in sport, another short walk brings you to Manchester United Football Club, where you can visit the clubs museum and take a tour of the ground. Its often difficult to see where Salford ends and Manchester begins, which means the attractions of this great northern city are also close at hand.
For shopping under one roof, visit the huge, indoor Trafford Centre which has over 280 retailers offering high street and designer brands. There are places to eat and drink in both the Lowry and the Trafford Centre but for an unrivaled selection of bars and restaurants take a short ride into Manchester city centre.
A thirty-minute drive takes you out of the city and into the beautiful Cheshire countryside. Attractions here include the Jodrel Bank Observatory, Tatton Park and Hall with 1000 acres of parkland and Quarry Bank Mill, a restored Georgian cotton mill in a beautiful woodland setting.
Manchester International Airport is just 10 miles from the city centre with good bus and rail connections into the city. By road, Salford is at the end of the M602 motorway. There are regular train services between London Euston and Manchester Piccadilly. Salford is just a short taxi ride from the city.
The major suburbs in Salford are: Boothstown, Broughton, Claremont, Langworthy, Pendleton, Ordsall and Seedley.
