Famed for being the birthplace of Dr JI Guillotin, the inventor of the guillotine, Saintes offers a historical adventure for keen sightseers. Located on the left bank of the river Charente in central France, the settlement was first established during Roman times and later became a vitally important economic hub.

There are a number of Roman ruins, including a giant amphitheatre, found across the town which give a fascinating insight into the way the Romans lived. Another church of interest can be found nearby; the church of St Eutrope. This was consecrated in 1096 and houses the tomb of St Eutrope, the first bishop of Saintes. Both historic churches are well worth viewing and full of character.
