Located twelve miles west of Paris is Saint-Germain-en-Laye, a suburb of the capital, with its many elegant tree-lined streets. Saint-Germain is considered the wealthiest suburb of Paris featuring several high quality leisure sports facilities and the ultimate in luxurious residential neighborhoods. It is part of the Yvelines department which is bordered by the well known National Forest of Saint-Germain and sits just south of the Forest of Marly. Saint-Germaine also sits along the left bank of the Seine River.

One site that visitors will want to take in is the famous chateau of Saint-Germain with its lush green landscape and the 2.4km stone terrace that overlooks the River Seine. The chateau was originally built for King Louis XIV in 1673, who was born there, and for twenty years (1661-81) it was his principal residence. During World War II, the city was the German Army’s headquarters during the 1940-44 occupation.

The city is best known for its forest and parks, but it is also the last station of the express Paris subway system should you be commuting in and out of Paris. The month of April is the time of Le Festival de la Foręt or Festival of the Forest. The forest has many bridleways and footpaths to explore for a relaxing afternoon, not to mention just to enjoy the greenery of the landscape and its breathtaking countryside.

A walk through the narrow streets and alleys of the city will reveal the numerous shopping venues that Saint-Georges is famous for, not to mention the various pastry and wine shops that you will find along the way.
