Once originally named Saint-Oyand after Saint Eugendus, the name of the city was changed to Saint-Claude in honor of Saint Claudius of the diocese of Besançon who died there in 696 AD.
The city was once under Gallic rule, but was one of many French towns that eventually succumbed to the Roman occupation of Europe and today boasts a modest population of just over 12,300 people.
