Saarlouis falls under Saarland, and lies on the banks of the river Saar. It has a population of 38,327. Saarlouis was established in honour of Louis XIV, France. The town was built as a fort and still dominates the city. Few parts of the fortress were not taken care off since 1887, after the Prussions got in power to control the town, but the rest can be still seen today, for example: the casemates, the great market, and some barracks with commander offices. The Vauban Island was built in tribute to Michel Ney, and still attracts good number of tourists every year. The city centre at Saarlouis has the “Ratskeller”. One can directly see it by taking a walk through the historic part of the town.

The steel and iron ore production unit had made Saarlouis a famous city. Mining facilities can also be found in the town. The port of Saarlouis is an industrial inland port. It is the 8th biggest port within Germany. Saarlouis is well connected with roads and highways. It is only 20 minutes away from France by road and 45 minutes from Luxemborg.
